Presence of Bethany in Jalandhar

Year 2006: Under the leadership of Very Rev. Fr. John Berchmans OIC, the then MCC- ETRI Coordinator, a Church was built at Ludhiana.

Rev. Fr. Varghese Vinaynand OIC was posted as the first Vicar of the Parish at Ludhiana. He started the Malankara liturgical services in Jalandhar in the year 2006.  For conducting our Liturgical Services, the Bishop of Jalandhar Diocese Most Rev. Symporian Keeprath willfully and happily gave permission to use the Church premises of Sacred Heart Church in the Jalandhar city, near the Bishop’s house.  

Year 2008: Fr. Vinayand OIC was transferred to Delhi and Rev. Fr. James Mammoottil OIC took charge as the priest-in-charge.

Year 2011: Rev. Fr. Geevarghese George OIC took over the charge and still continues the pastoral care to the community.

Bishops of Jalandhar His Excellency Bp. Symporian, Bp. Anil Jose Coute and present Bishop Franco Mulakkal, the Vicar General and clergy of the Diocese of Jalandhar provided all facilities and church premises etc. to the Malankara Community.

There are 13 Malankara families who are in the fellowship of Malayalee Community. DM sisters regularly come to the Liturgical services and take Catechism classes to the children.

Year 2018: Rev. Fr. Jinto John, who is a newly ordained priest in Delhi (working as Secretary to the Bishop), is appointed as the new Priest-in-charge to take care of the Jalandhar Parish.

Mullanpur Mission- Punjab         

Year 2014: Bethany Ashram started this mission under the leadership of Fr. Geevarghese George Vazhanapuzha OIC along with the then Regent Bro. Paul George OIC.

Prayer meetings conducted in Bethany Ashram, Mullanpur for 5 months and continued in the houses of the villagers. Most of the people are Bricks workers and they have houses in other states.

Bethany Ashram conducts classes for children who are not going to school and for elders three days a week. House visiting is arranged regularly, almost 12 houses a day. At present there are three villages to work and it could be extended to other villages. Holy Mass in Hindi is conducted in the Ashram Chapel on Sundays.

Mission in Ludhiana - Punjab

Year 2002:  

  • His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Symporian Keeprath, Bishop of Jalandhar, gave permission to celebrate Malankara Liturgy by accepting a written request from His Grace Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios (the first Catholicos of the MCC).

The first Malankara Holy Qurbana was celebrated in Holy Cross Church, Sarabha Nagar on 21st, 2002  by Rev. Fr. Cherian Mambrakuzhy and  Rev. Fathers Jose Karimpil, Thomas Moothanteth, Alex Kannamala (all from Thiruvalla Archdiocese)     and Sajan Vattakattu (Bathery diocese) continued serving the community.


  • 2005: Bethany mission started, realizing the dream of the founder of Bethany Ashram, architect of Malankara Reunion and Servant of God Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios OIC to go to the villages of Punjab and spread the Gospel.
  • 2006:  Bethany Navajeevan Province took charge of the Punjab community

First official vicar:Rev. Fr. Varghese Vinayanand OIC who started staying in Ludhiana parsonage and gave spiritual leadership to the faithful.

  • 2008:   Rev. Fr. James Mammoottil OIC took charge as vicar
  • 2010 Rev. Fr. Geevarghese George Vazhanapuzha OIC became vicar and still continues.

28th July 2013:  Bethany Ashram was erected in Rurka Kalan, a remote village in Punjab and on Feb. 20th 2015 St. Martha Bethany School was established.
